Age Group:
4 and up
It is never too early to do science experiments. It just may look different for different age groups.
Materials:
- Ice tray
- Food coloring
- Three clear cups
- Paper and pen (for hypothesis and results)
Step by Step:
For this activity all you have to do is make an ice tray with the primary colors. BLUE, YELLOW, RED. When it has frozen put all the ice in one bowl.
You can use this (FREE PRINTABLE) for the “recipe” or experiments you will do.
1st cup – have the child place a RED and a YELLOW ice cube
2nd cup- have the child place a RED and a BLUE ice cube
3rd cup- have the child place a BLUE and a YELLOW ice cube
When the child has placed the ice cub in the correct cup you can then talk to the child about what they think will happen. Explain to them that this is their hypothesis. It is important to write it down so you can go back to it later and compare it to the result. When the child has made their hypothesis you can then start a timer for 30 minutes.
When the timer goes off you and your child can make your way back to the cups and see the results of your experiment. Talk to them about what their hypothesis is and what the results are. Are they the same?
Objective:
The objective is to learn about the scientific process in a fun and playful way. It is a great opportunity to explore colors and see what colors can be made using the primary colors. Your children will use their problem solving skills to try to figure out what the results will be. They will need to follow direction and stay organized in order to do this experiment which is a great skill to have. Not to mention they will need to wait 30 minutes which builds patience and anticipation.
