ExploreTexture with Play-Dough (Nature)

Age:
Whenever you feel comfortable with your child playing with playdough.

What you need:

Best Play-dough Recipe:

2 ½ cup of flour
½ cup of salt
1tbl alum
1 ¾ cup boiling water
2 tbsp oil (coconut water)

How to:
If you are collecting items from nature all you have to do is go on a walk with your little one. On your walk collect pieces of nature that you can keep and add to your playdough fun. Try to help your child choose items with different textures.

Example: pine cones, sticks, rocks, acorns, leaves, etc.

When you get home take out the play-doh and let them explore. You can show them how to roll, push, print, etc. with the items collected to make different patterns. Then let them loose and see what they can come up with.

If you are collecting items from around the house. Have your child take a basket of containers where they can collect all different times from around the house. Have them walk around and ask them to choose items with different textures. Of course, they may choose things you would rather not use with play-doh and that’s OK you can still talk about the texture of the item and explain why that item can’t be used for this activity.

Examples of items: balls with different textures, spoons, forks, lego, dinosaur figurines, etc.

Objective:
This activity is a great way for children to play around with different textures and patterns. This can be a great STEM activity when you make your own play-dough and then go on the hunt for textures. It is a wonderful sensory experience that is full of opportunities to develop new vocabulary while playing and creating.
